Later Baby Spring Break - Whoo hoo!

By Smitha R. Chadaga MD

I’m a self-described nerd who had spring breaks like Rory and Paris or that met Monica Geller’s definition of “spring vacation”.

So when Mindy (@mindykaling) and Jody (@garretdilahunt) sponsored Later Baby Spring Break (college girls come to NYC to freeze their eggs) on Episode 14 of Season 4 of The Mindy Project (@TheMindyProject) it sounded too wild and crazy for me.  Would be possible to do the procedure over spring break?  Just barely.

Egg freezing follows a similar time table as in vitro fertilization. A few weeks of oral hormones are followed by 1-2 weeks of hormone injections to stimulate egg maturation.  During this time daily doctor’s visits are needed to check blood levels as well as ultrasounds.  When the eggs are mature they can be retrieved in a relatively short (about 30 minutes) procedure.  The eggs are then frozen and can be thawed later for fertilization and implantation.  A few things to keep in mind about egg freezing: 1) it is not usually covered by insurance if done on an elective basis so the cost must be considered 2) there is no guarantee of successful pregnancy 3) not everyone is a candidate for the process.
